So, we decided to take on the world of triathlons TOGETHER! Team VanOss has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? It was a cold Sunday morning on July 18th and it didn’t help that it was 6:45 am and the first leg of the race was in Lake Washington… the cold choppy Lake Washington. We divided up the sprint, Ashley taking the swim and the bike and Tim finishing strong with the run.
Besides not having done much open water swimming to train, there were other obstacles to the swim leg for Ashley. Let’s just say 95% of the athletes wore wetsuits – Ashley did not. The next obstacle was the fact that the relay swimmers swam with the men, ages 40-45. What? Ashley weighs 120 – i think she might die (she thought she might die right out there in the midst of the foggy lake surrounded by middle-aged men in white swim caps that somewhat resembled frantic seals flipping away from a shark).
Whew, moving on to the bike. That was better. Once again training was mostly in spin class at LA fitness and not so much on I-90 with a head wind (have i mentioned that we signed up for this volunterily and actually had a lot of fun).
Tim finished out the race with a quick run around Seward Park. His shoe came untied at mile 2 but he was too afraid of getting an earful from his competitive wife about a poor time, so he pushed through the last mile with laces a-flailing. Now that is love.
Deidra, Ashley, Jason, Elizabeth, and Ian were waiting near the finish to cheer him on to victory, 1st place!! ok, nope. We didn’t come in 1st and probably not even in the top 10 relay teams, but the VanOss’ had fun and with one sprint triathlon under their belts who knows what acts of athleticism they will “tri” for next.
