Uhg, I have turned this in to a “mom blog.” I promise posts on fun new cocktails and outdoor adventures again, but for now I thought I would write about all of the products we have loved and would recommend to all of you wonderful friends out there expecting little ones! Here are a few thoughts on swaddles, strollers, bouncer, and breast pump:
1. Swaddle, swaddle, swaddle. It is the first of the 5 S’s of soothing a crying baby for good reason. Perhaps we aren’t the best swaddlers but we were never able to get Brooks tight enough in blankets to keep him put (he is so wiggly and flips his little feet constantly!). He busts his legs and arms out of just about everything, but there are a couple that have held him in better than others.
The miracle blanket swaddle is perhaps more expensive than most ($30 at Target or amazon) and seems a little like a torture device, but it individually wraps baby’s arms in tight and really worked miracles for us.
The Halo SleepSack was also great as you can get baby really tight and when they are older you can still use it as a sleep sack.
I know my sister only used the Aidan and Anias muslin swaddles as she had a sweet little girl. While these didn’t necessarily work for Brooks as swaddles, I have to recommend getting at least a 4 pack of them as they are so versatile for a burp cloth, cover up, blanket, or protecting friends nice bedspreads when you nurse at their house 🙂 I keep one in about every room and one in his diaper bag.
2. I don’t know if all bouncy seats are created equal, but I will say we have loved the Baby Bjorn Balance seat. This came from my aunt/cousin as they had loved theirs and I have to pass along the recommendation. Brooks loves it and is in it at least a little while every day (and also when I try to cook or shower!). It also folds up pretty small to slide out of the way or travel with.
3. Stroller. Perhaps because I sell them at REI, I am partial to the BOB and in particular the Revolution SE. If you want to run or jog with your baby at all this is your stroller – it is the “JEEP” of strollers with a good suspension system. If you have other strollers and want a jogging only, the BOB Ironman is also great. Until your LO can hold their own head up, you will need to buy a carseat adaptor so you can just snap your carseat in and go. I will say that the BOB is a little heavy and if you aren’t a jogger and just want a good light stroller we have some friends with the Uppa Baby Cruz who really like it for life in the city (aka hauling things up and down steep staircases).
4. Breastpump – We have the Medela Pump In Style (because you have to be stylish while pumping your boobs?). Getting back to work part time it has been nice to have the double pump to make things go a little faster. I just recently had my first “all day” away from Brooks and the little cooler and 4 pack of bottles were perfect for the day. If you are working full time I would guess you want to buy a couple more packs of the bottles. Also, be sure and check with your insurance to see if they cover a pump. With the new healthcare regulations a lot of insurances cover breast pumps and will be required to soon. Way to go Pro-Breastfeeding government 🙂
